A REFLECTION ABOUT DO SCHOOLS KILL CREATIVITY?
We all know that the education system plays a key role in shaping the minds of young people and preparing them for the future.According to Sir Ken Robinson, creativity now is as important in education as literacy and we should treat it with the same status. And I agree because I’m a product of a performing arts group in school where creativity is really important where we can express ourselves through music and dance. And throughout my basic education to tertiary education, creativity plays an important role and it helped me to become who I am today.
But over the years, concerns have been raised about the impact of traditional education on students' creative abilities. It examines the argument that schools inadvertently stifle creativity and limit individual expression. While it is important to recognize the importance of academic achievement, it is equally important to promote creativity and innovation in educational institutions.
One common factor that inhibits creativity in schools is the fear of failure. A grading system is valuable for assessing students' knowledge and skills, but it increases the pressure for perfection. As a result, students are reluctant to take risks and explore innovative ideas for fear of possible negative consequences for their academic performance.
In order to achieve academic excellence and prepare students for standardized tests, schools often neglect the arts and humanities. By focusing primarily on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields, schools inadvertently devalue creativity and imagination. Art subjects such as music, dance and visual arts are important not only for developing artistic skills, but also for developing cognitive skills, self-expression and problem-solving. By neglecting these areas, schools limit students' opportunities for creative growth.
By encouraging curiosity, embracing diversity of thought and providing opportunities for self-expression, schools can act as a catalyst for creativity and nurture a generation of students who can think outside the box and push boundaries. Through joint efforts, schools can become institutions that truly inspire and enhance the creative and its full potential of individuals.
